Description of the genus

Prickly annual herb. Leaves alternate; margins toothed or pinnatifid. Inflorescence terminal, closely subtended by foliage leaves crowded beneath the proper involucre. Flowers yellow, tubular; involucre of several series of broad, firm, spine-tipped bracts; receptacle flat, bristly. Fruit an achene, obliquely attached to the receptacle, many-ribbed, glabrous with a firm 10-toothed crown; pappus biseriate.

Worldwide: One species native to the Mediterranean east to Iran.
