Description of the genus

Tree. Leaves opposite, entire or 3-lobed. Inflorescences of terminal panicles. Corolla: tube elongated, 5-lobed; lobes 5, slightly unequal. Stamens 4. Fruit a loculicidal capsule with 2 valves. Seeds small, winged.

Derivation of name: Named for Princess Anna Paulovna (Paulowna) (1795 - 1865) of the Netherlands, daughter of Czar Paul I of Russia

Worldwide: 6 species in E Asia

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
