Staples, G.W. & Herbst, D.R. (2005) A Tropical Garden Flora; plants cultivated in the Hawaiian islands and other tropical places. Bishop Museum Press, Honolulu, Hawaii.
Erect or prostrate herbs. Leaves whorled or opposite on the lower stem, alternate above, sessile, base often running down onto stem; margins often serrate, or entire. Inflorescence of terminal racemes of solitary flowers in axils of upper leaves. Calyx deeply 5-lobed; lobes subequal, lanceolate; corolla 2-lipped, with short, broad tube bearing 2 small pouches on the lower side. Fruit subglobose, dehiscent by 2 valves. Seeds often pitted. Comment: In addition to Angelonia salicariifolia, Biegel (1977) lists Angelonia hybrid and Angelonia cv. 'Alba'. For the time being I have not created separate pages for these taxa. Worldwide: 25 species native to tropical America, the majority in Brazil. Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
