Description of the genus

Shrubs or trees. Stipules interpetiolar, cup shaped and acuminate, deciduous. Leaves decussate, petiolate; lamina leathery, without domata. Inflorescence thyrse, terminal on lateral branches; bracts small to minute. Flowers 5-merous; calyx lobes free, either very unequal (1 or 2 lobes enlarged) or sub-equal (all lobes enlarged); enlarged calyx lobes brightly coloured; corolla zygomorphic to actinomorphic, tubes curved or straight, cylindric and gradually widening above, lobes small acuminate, contorted to left in bud. Fruit crowned by persistent calyx lobes (enlarged lobes wing-like), dry. Seeds elongated, ventrally concave.

Worldwide: 6 species: 1 in South Africa; 5 in Madagascar

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
