Description of the genus

Lianas, shrubs or trees. Leaves opposite-decussate or verticillate; lamina margins entire, coriaceous. Inflorescence racemes, terminal or axillary. Flowers slightly zygomorphic violet, blue or white; calyx tube campanulate, 5-lobed with 5 scales in the throat, lobes coloured, longer than the tube; corolla tube short, cylindric, limb 5-lobed with unequal brightly coloured lobes. Fruit drupes enclosed in persistent, hardened calyx forming a 5-winged samara.

Worldwide: Species 12 in Florida to tropical America.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
