Perennial erect herbs. Leaves opposite below, alternate above. Flowers in terminal racemes. Calyx 5-lobed. Corolla strongly 2-lipped, variously coloured; tube gibbous at base; throat with a projecting palate, which closes the corolla mouth. Stamens 4.
