Description of the genus

Annual herb, up to 1.5 m high, hairy. Leaves alternate, simple, elliptic to ovate, up to 20 cm. long. Flowers in loose, bracteate monochasia with 5 pointed petals. Sepals c. 1 cm long. Corolla blue with scales at the throat. Receptacle flat.

Worldwide: 5 species, native to the Mediterranean region, widely grown in gardens.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
