Description of the genus

Branched annual herbs with glandular indumentum. Leaves alternate, pinnatifid with spiny margins. Capitula discoid, solitary. Involucre with bracts in many rows, imbricate, spiny, outer leaf-like, inner sometimes with apical appendages. Florets yellow. Pappus usually double; outer row of persistent scales; inner row with scales, shorter and basally connate.

Worldwide: 14 species in the Mediterranean region, Asia and 1 in southern Africa

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
