Glabrous perennial herbs; stems branched, up to 1 m tall; rhizomes thick and fleshy. Leaves sometimes opposite, sessile or with short petioles; blades ovate. Flowers erect, cup-shaped, solitary on long stalks, purple, blue, pink or white; buds greatly inflated. Fruit a capsule, opening at the apex by 5 valves. Worldwide: A single variable species native to East Asia. Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
