Perennial herbs with square stems. Leaves simple, opposite, usually aromatic. Flowers yellow on axillary spikes. Calyx 2-lipped, strongly 13-nerved, angular, the upper lip flattened, oblong, with 3 conspicuous nerves prolonged into the very short, broadly triangular lobes, the lower lip as long, cleft nearly to the base into narrow, subulate-tipped lobes; corolla tube up-curved, the upper lip concave, 2-lobed, lower lip with rounded lateral lobes and a longer median lobe. Fruit consisting of obovoid smooth nutlets. Worldwide: 4 species, native to Europe and Asia. Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
