Description of the genus

Palms, form dense clumps; stem slender enclosed in a fibrous network. Leaves palmate, placed along the stem; midrib absent, palmately segmented nearly to base; induplicate; leaflets blunt-tipped, several ribbed, margin toothed. Inflorescence axillary, small. Flowers calyx tri-lobed; petals connate. Fruit berries, 1-3 per flower, small. Seeds 1, thin, stony.

Worldwide: 12 species in Japan, China and SE Asia.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
