Annuals or perennials. Inflorescence of very short racemes, sunk in cavities on one or both sides of a thickened, foliaceous or corky, axis; racemes with 1-8 spikelets the raceme rhachis ending in a point. Spikelets abaxial; glumes both short or upper as long as spikelet; lower lemma coriaceous; upper lemma chartaceous. Derivation of name: from Greek: stenos meaning narrow and taphros meaning a trench, referring to the cavities in the raceme axis. Worldwide: 7 species in tropical and warm regions.
