Description of the genus

Evergreen perennial herbs, clump-forming with stout, scaly rhizome, usually on the soil surface, glabrous. Leaves spirally arranged rosette, large, simple, thick, margins serrate or crenate. Inflorescence a many-flowered panicle on the erect leafless stem; flowers perigynous with cup-shaped hypanthium; sepals 5; petals 5, pink. Fruit a capsule with 2 follicles.

Worldwide: 10 species native to central Asia.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
