Description of the genus

Monoecious trees. Leaves alternate or spiral, large, stiff, entire, lobed or compound. Flowers small, numerous. Male flowers borne in oblong or club-shaped stiff spikes; perianth 2-4-lobed; stamen 1. Female flowers borne in a dense spherical or oblong head; perianth tubular, contracted at the apex; style usually exserted. Fruit an often large syncarp, echinate or prickly (in ours). Seeds large, embedded in the flesh of the fruit.

Derivation of name: from the Greek artos bread and carpos fruit, referring to Artocarpus altilis, the Breadfruit.

Worldwide: Native to India.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
