Description of the genus

Shrubs, erect, pubescent or glabrous. Leaves margins entire, slender petiole. Inflorescence panicles, terminal, simple or branched; bracts and bractlets minute. Flowers yellow, subulate or lanceolate; calyx usually without glands; sepals 5, narrow, persistent; petals 5 entire or dentate, base abruptly unguiculate, persistent in fruit. Fruit capsules, small, trilobate.

Worldwide: 8 species in tropical America.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
