Description of the genus

Herbs or shrubs. Leaves opposite-decussate, ternate or alternate, deciduous. Flowers 5-7-merous, solitary. Calyx with appendages. Petals yellow, as many as calyx lobes. Stamens twice as many as calyx lobes. Fruit a capsule, sub-coriaceous.

Worldwide: Species 3, native from Texas to Argentina, Jamaica; one in southern Africa.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
