Description of the genus

Perennial herbs, with elongated, creeping rhizome, nodes dense. Leaves solitary or 2-4-tufted, basal, erect, long petiole; lamina many veined. Inflorescence terminal; scape usually very short, with 2-8 scales 1(or2)-flowered; flowers usually with 1 or 2 bracts at perianth base. Fruit berries, ovoid or globose, usually 1 seeded.

Worldwide: 55 species in China, India, Japan, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
