Trees. Leaves simple, alternate, small to medium-sized (3-16 cm long). Inflorescences terminal or axillary, consisting of racemes or once-branched paniculate arrangements of racemes. Flowers present with the leaves, zygomorphic. Sepals 6. Petals 6, flat at the apex. Androecium forming a short, membranous tube, prolonged on one side into a ligule but hood not developed, the stamens scattered over the inner surface of the tube, not reflexed; anthers laterally dehiscent. Ovary 3-locular; ovules c. 6 per locule. Fruit dehiscent, remaining on tree at maturity, cylindric, woody. Seeds winged on one side, numerous. Worldwide: 15 species in tropical America Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
