Erect, rhizomatous perennial herbs, up to 2 m tall. Leaves opposite, narrow, with serrate margins. Flowers showy, pink-purple or white, borne singly in the axils of small bracts, forming elongate terminal racemes. Calyx regular with triangular lobes; corolla tube much larger than calyx; upper lip straight, concave; lower lip spreading, 3-lobed. Fruit consisting of ovoid, smooth nutlets. Worldwide: 12 species, native to North America Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
