Description of the genus

Perennial herbs or shrubs between 30 cm to 2 m tall. Leaves opposite, entire, hairy. Bracts often similar to lower leaves. Flowers large, in dense clusters axillary to the bracteal leaves. Calyx strongly 5-nerved with subulate lobes, the upper 3 ascending or erect, the lower spreading or deflexed; corolla strongly 2-lipped, the upper concave, the lower deflexed. Fruit consisting of nutlets, hairy at the tip.

Worldwide: Over 100 species, native from the Mediterranean to China.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
