Description of the genus

Perennial herbs up to 1 m high, densely pubescent. Leaves ovate, cordate at the base, green/grey, serrate; bracts very reduced. Flowers in dense terminal spikes. Calyx 5-lobed. Corolla white with purple spots; tube curved and dilated at the middle. Fruit consisting of nutlets.

Worldwide: About 250 species, native to Europe, Africa and Asia.
