Annual or perennial herbs, erect to 90 cm. Leaves opposite, serrate, lanceolate, aromatic. Flowers tubular, bilaterally symmetric, aggregated into head-like clusters terminating the branches or borne in the upper axils subtended by foliaceous bracts; calyx tubular, lobes shorter than the tube; corolla strongly bilabiate, upper lip narrow, straight or curved, lower lib broader, spreading or deflexed, 3-lobed with a central projecting tooth. Worldwide: About 20 species, endemic to North America. Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
