Shrubs, sub-shrubs or perennial herbs; terrestrial or epiphytic; rhizomes scaly; stems usually erect, sometimes decumbent. Leaves opposite or in whorls of 3-4, petiolate; lamina hairy. Inflorescence few-flowered, of fasciculate to umbellate cymes, or solitary, from leaf or bract axils; sepals erect or recurved, equalling or larger than floral tube; corolla somewhat zygomorphic, red or greenish; hirsute outside. Fruit a capsule, dry, dehiscing into 2 valves. Worldwide: 17 species in Western Cordillera from Peru to Mexico, Venezuela, Trinidad and Guianas. Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
