Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate; margins entire or dentate, occasionally pinnatifid. Inflorescence hemispheric or flattened, radiate; rays white, yellow or pink; involucral bracts in 2-4 series, dry, becoming scarious at least on the margins; receptacle flat or convex, naked; disk flowers tubular, corolla with (4-)5 lobes. Fruit an achene; pappus a short crown, or absent. Worldwide: 40 species and countless cultivars; native to northeastern Europe and Asia. China is the centre of diversity.
