Shrubs or small trees, prostrate to erect or climbing by rootlets. Leaves opposite, deciduous or evergreen with finely serrated margins. Inflorescence of small single flowers or cymose in the axils. Petals spreading widely. Fruit 3-5- lobed, pink or white pod-like berry splitting open to reveal the orange to red seeds. Worldwide: 130 species native to East Asia, Australasia, Europe, Madagascar and parts of North America. Zimbabwe: 2 cultivated taxa. |
