Delostoma D. Don

Description of the genus

Trees or shrubs. Leaves opposite, simple, 3-veined from the base; margin serrate to entire. Inflorescence a raceme or panicle. Calyx thick, cup-shaped, usually double. Corolla (in ours) magenta to whitish with a relatively long tube and short lobes. Fruit a ± flattened narrowly elliptic capsule.

Derivation of name: from Greek delo, clear, evident and stoma, a mouth, referring to the wide mouth of the corolla.

Worldwide: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
