Description of the genus

Palms, small, unarmed; stems clustered, erect; leaf sheath tubular, unarmed. Leaves pinnate with leaf segments regularly spaced along rhachis. Inflorescence axillary below crown of leaves, ascending; peduncular bracts 5-6, tubular, papery, turning orange in fruit. Flowers sessile. Fruit drupes, globose, exocarp black. Seeds globose.

Worldwide: 107 species in tropical C and S America.

Zimbabwe: 10 cultivated taxa.
