Description of the genus

Terrestrial herbs, with rhizomes or tubers; latex milky. Leaves petiole sheathed at base, blades arrow-shaped. Inflorescence one to several per axil, shorter than leaves, spathe constricted, tube edges overlapping at base; spathe blade boat-shaped, usually white, deciduous; spadix in sections, green to bright orange. Fruit cylindric with many seeds.

Worldwide: About 45 species native to the New World tropics.
