Perennial herbs, bulbs subterranean, base producing offsets. Leaves radical, few or several; base abruptly narrowed into a slender petiole; lamina ovate or lanceolate. Inflorescence an umbel, few flowered; flowers nodding; peduncle solid. Flowers large and showy, white; radially symmetric; perianth tube cylindric, short with a dilated throat; segments equal, oval or oblong; ovary inferior. Fruit a capsule, loculicidal; deeply trilobed. Seeds few, often single; large, rounded, black or blue. Worldwide: 17 species with natural hybrids, tropical America Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
