Description of the genus

Perennial herbs from a rhizomatous root stock; roots fleshy. Leaves basal, 2-ranked; lamina strap-like, leathery; bases slightly swollen in deciduous species. Inflorescence an umbel subtended by two large membranous bracts. Flowers funnel-shaped or tubular; blue or white; tepals united below into a short tube. Fruit 3-angled capsule, loculicidal. Seeds several per chamber, black, flat, winged.

Worldwide: 7 species in Cape Province South Africa

Zimbabwe: 2 cultivated taxa.
