Description of the genus

Herbs or shrubs, mostly glabrous. Leaves large, simple, opposite, strongly pinnate-veined; with numerous cystoliths. Inflorescence of solitary flowers or fascicles. Bracts large and showy. Flowers also large and showy, red, yellow, purple or orange; calyx 5-merous; corolla tube cylindric, 5-lobed. Stamens 2. Fruit an oblong capsule. Seeds 6-8, orbicular.

Worldwide: 30 species in tropical America

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
