Perennial herbs or shrubs; stem nodes swollen. Leaves simple, opposite; margins entire. Inflorescence consisting of erect racemes with relatively long and conspicuous bracts; calyx 5-merous with unequal lobes. Corolla almost actinomorphic with a cylindric tube and 5 spreading lobes. Fertile stamens 2. Fruit club-shaped. Seeds up to 4, hairy, slimy when wet. Worldwide: 30 species from tropical Asia Zimbabwe: 2 cultivated taxa. |
