Shrubs or herbs; stems soft-woody to succulent. Leaves opposite, petiolate; blades elongated to elliptic, often strongly variegated and showy in cultivated species; margins entire. Inflorescence of terminal spikes; bracts large, overlapping, often coloured. Flowers sessile; corolla tubular, 2-lipped, upper lip entire or 2-lobed, lower lip 3-lobed; 4 fertile stamens. Fruit with a short stalk; valves recurved after opening. Seeds usually 4, disc-shaped. Worldwide: 175 species in tropical America Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
