Herbs. Leaves alternate or radical,
entire to lyrate-pinnatifid. Capitula heterogamous, radiate,
solitary. Phyllaries many-seriate, the outer with apical
appendages. Receptacle alveolate, setose. Ray florets female or
neuter. Disk florets bisexual. Achenes ribbed or winged, with the
wings folding to form 2 linear chambers on one side. Pappus
c.2-seriate, of delicate hyaline scales, the inner pappus of 5-10
scales equalling the achene in length, the outer pappus
smaller. Worldwide: 50 species in southern Africa from Angola and Zimbabwe to South Africa Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon. |
