Description of the genus

Succulent perennial herbs, often glaucous. Leaves alternate, usually entire. Capitula usually homogamous, discoid, 1-many in an inflorescence. Phyllaries 1-seriate. Calyculus usually present, less often 0. Receptacle flat, lacking scales. Flowers tubular, 5-toothed; style arms appendaged. Achenes without a beak. Pappus of bristles in several series.

Worldwide: c.40 species from the Canary Is, tropical and South Africa, Madagascar, Arabia to Sri Lanka

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
