Description of the genus

Annual or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, 3-5-lobed at least below. Capitula terminal on the branches (in ours), heterogamous, radiate; ray florets female, 1(-2)-seriate, rays longer than pappus; disk florets yellow, bisexual. Receptacle flat, naked. Achenes ± terete or flattened. Pappus of a single series of white minutely barbellate setae.

Worldwide: c.150 species, cosmopolitan, but especially N America.

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
