Description of the genus

Annuals. Inflorescence a linear raceme, bearing single spikelets along the rhachis. Spikelets 3-9-flowered. Glumes oblong to ovate, coriaceous, 5-11-nerved, 1-2-keeled, obtuse, truncate or 2-dentate, mucronate or awned. Lemmas rounded on the back, the apex similar to the glumes.

Worldwide: c. 10 - 20 species, E Mediterranean to Iran
