Description of the genus

Unarmed herbs, usually viscid. Leaves mostly alternate, the upper sometimes in pairs and appearing opposite. Inflorescence a solitary flower, arising from a pair of leaf-like bracts. Calyx deeply divided, almost to the base, slightly accrescent in fruit. Stamens 5, included. Fruit a capsule. Seeds numerous, minute.

Worldwide: 35 species in tropical and warm regions of S America
