Description of the genus

Annuals (in ours) or perennials. Inflorescence a ± branched panicle with slender pedicels. Spikelets several-many-flowered; glumes ovate-circular, 3-9-nerved, cordate, unawned; lemma subcircular, cordate at base, dorsally rounded, usually saccate, obscurely 7-9-veined, unawned.

Worldwide: 20 species from temperate Eurasia and S America

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
