Description of the genus

Herbaceous or woody climbers. Leaves entire, ovate or circular, cordate; densely glandular beneath (the glands appearing as black dots in dried specimens). Inflorescences pedunculate cymes. Sepals 5, enlarging in fruit. Corolla red or purple, funnel-shaped. Fruit a spherical capsule, completely enclosed by the much enlarged calyx. Seeds 4, pubescent. Pericarp thin, breaking irregularly.

Worldwide: 9 species in the tropics

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
