Description of the genus

Shrubs or small trees with succulent stems and milky latex, bearing ternate spines at each node. Leaves alternate or spiral. Inflorescence of terminal cymes; flowers showy, pink, purple, yellow or partly white. Corolla lobes overlapping to the right. Anthers with only a short terminal appendage. Fruit of 2 carpels. Seeds with an apical coma.

Worldwide: 13 species, mostly Madagascan, and Southern Africa.

Zimbabwe: 6 cultivated taxa.
