Description of the genus

Shrubs or trees with milky latex. Stipules 0. Leaves in whorls of 3-6. Inflorescences of terminal, sometimes apparently lateral, umbellate or corymbose, cymes. Calyx lobes connate at base only. Corolla salver-shaped (in ours); tube cylindric; lobes overlapping to the left. Stamens inserted above middle of corolla tube. Ovary composed of 2, free or partly to completely fused, carpels. Fruit either with only 1 carpel developing and then subspherical or with 2 carpels developing and then 2-lobed.

Worldwide: c. 60 species in the tropics

Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated taxon.
