Description of the genus

Derivation of name: after Johann Peter Ernst Scheffler, an 18th century Polish botanist and physician born in 1739.

Comment: In a recent revision the formerly broadly described genus Schefflera was split. This genus is now restricted to species in New Zealand and the Southwest Pacific only. Zimbabwean species formerly included in Schefflera are now in Astropanax or Neocussonia. Some species known from cultivation in Zimbabwe have been placed in Heptapleurum or Plerandra.

Worldwide: 13 species in New Zealand to Southwest Pacific.

Zimbabwe: 0 cultivated taxa.
