Woody climbers, shrubs or trees. Leaves simple, opposite, rarely whorled or alternate; margins usually entire. Stipules sometimes present. Inflorescence of axillary cymes, terminal panicles or solitary flowers. Flowers 5-merous, bisexual, actinomorphic. Sepals persistent, free or fused. Petals funnel-shaped, partly or completely fused; white to pink or orange (Mostuea) yellow (Gelsemium) or yellow to red (Pteleocarpa). Stamens opposite the sepals; filaments attached to petals. Ovary superior, carpels fused. Fruit a capsule or samara. Worldwide: Genera 3; species 13 in tropical and subtropical regions. Zimbabwe: 1 cultivated genus and 1 cultivated taxon. |
