Description:
A suffrutex growing from a woody rhizomatous rootstock; stems herbaceous, 1–several, up to c. 1 m high (usually less than 30 cm), erect, usually simple, sometimes few-branched, more or less densely hispid-pubescent, with short erect hairs mixed with scattered long purplish to whitish spreading hairs. Leaves mostly opposite to subopposite, oblong-obovate to obovate or more or less broadly oblong, 5–15.5 cm long, lowermost leaves smallest, sometimes bract-like, light to dark green, somewhat discolorous, sparsely covered with short hairs on both surfaces, densest on the veins; veins more or less impressed above and prominent beneath; margin usually entire or sometimes with a few broad teeth towards the apex; petiole ascending, 0.7–3.5 cm long, slender, grooved. Inflorescence terminal, capitate, subglobose, 3.5–9 cm long, sometimes with additional flower clusters in the axils beneath; bracts maroon to purplish, elliptic to narrowly lanceolate, 1.2–3.5 cm long, pubescent outside. Calyx 1.5–2 cm long, with lobes dark purple or pale green margined with purple. Corolla sweet-scented, white or creamy-white; tube 5–7.9 cm long, with glandular hairs or ± sessile glands. Stamens exserted for c. 2.5 cm. Fruit c. 1.3 cm long and 0.8–1.3 cm wide.
Notes: This species is similar to Clerodendrum capitatum (Willd.) Schumach. & Thonn. which is not found in Zimbabwe. It clearly differs in being a low-growing suffrutex not a scrambling shrub or liane with spine-like modified petiole bases as well as somewhat different leaves. .
