Description:
Somewhat scrambling shrub up to 4 m tall with young branches densely covered with straw-coloured, golden or rusty hairs. Leaves opposite, oblong-elliptic, 1.2-6.5 cm long, velvety beneath, particularly on the veins, sparsely velvety above; domatia absent or inconspicuous; petiole 1-2 mm long; stipules triangular at the base, 2-5 mm long with a somewhat decurrent lobe. Flowers functionally unisexual, mostly 5-merous; male flowers in 2-12-flowered axillary clusters; female flowers solitary or rarely paired. Corolla yellowish-green to cream with a ring of inwardly directed hairs in the throat of female flowers. Fruit broadly obovoid, 7-12 mm long, flattened, somewhat indented at the apex, pubescent, yellow, turning black when ripe.

Habitat: In Brachystegia woodland, mixed deciduous woodland on rocky hillsides or outcrops and in riverine forest, usually on sandy soils.
