Description:
Shrub up to 3 m high with numerous short and slender, densely woolly hairy branchlets. Leaves opposite, crowded and somewhat appressed to the branches, small and needle-like, linear-ovate, 1.3-5 mm long, hairless.Inflorescences terminal mostly 4-flowered clusters on numerous short upper branchlets, together forming compound inflorescences. Bracts subtending the flower clusters 4, ovate to obovate, 4-6 mm long, often keeled. Flowers yellowish, pink or red, lobes 2-3 mm long.
Notes: Resembles a shrub-like Erica sp. but it has strictly opposite small leaves and not in whorls of 3-4.
Derivation of specific name: montana: of mountainous areas (montane)
Habitat: Montane grassland, miombo woodland and along streams, often as part of ericoid vegetation.
Altitude range: (metres) 1370 - 2300 m

Worldwide distribution: Angola, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and North West, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
