Description:
Shortly erect,or decumbent-ascending, shrubby herb with stems up to 45 cm long, growing from a woody rootstock, often with fusiform tubers up to 15 cm long. Most part covered in conspicuous plumose setae up to 2 mm long and with dark glands present. Leaves bipinnate mostly with 1-2 pairs of pinnae and a much longer terminal pinna; leaflets 2-6 pairs on lateral pinnae and 4-12 pairs on terminal pinna, usually oblong or oblong-elliptic, 4-11mm long. Inflorescence up to 12.5 cm long including peduncle. Calyx with lowest lobe often frilled at the apex. Petals,red, orange, salmon pink or purple. Pods obliquely oblong, 1-8-3.2 cm long, straight or slightly curved, densely covered in plumose setae, 3-4-seeded.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: burchellii: after William John Burchell (1781-1863), botanical collector, painter, writer, gardener, entomologist, early explorer and naturalist in South Africa.
Habitat: On Kalahari sand in mixed woodland, wooded grassland and in dry riverbeds.
