Description:
Vigorous climber or liane with most parts roughly hairy. Leaves large, up to 35 × 40 cm, palmately 5-lobed, deeply and narrowly cordate at the base; lobes with acuminate points. Flowers in pendulous racemes, greenish-cream, unisexual; male racemes up to 40 cm long, often branched; female racemes up to 10 cm long. Fruit a drupelet, c. 2.5 × 2 cm.
Notes: Jateorhiza palmata somewhat resembles Dioscoreophyllum cumminsii, but can be distinguished by its larger leaves which are usually 5-lobed (3-lobed in D. cumminsii) and have a deeply narrowly cordate base (more broadly cordate base in D. cumminsii).

Habitat: In moist woodland, forest and riverine fringes.
Altitude range: (metres) Up to 1500 m
Flowering time:
Worldwide distribution: Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Mauritius. Possibly introduced in Ghana.
