Description:
Low growing perennial, 10 - 20 cm, with a subterranean stem growing from corms, sometimes forming clumps. Leaves 4-7, linear, up to 25 cm, plicate with hairs on the ribs. Leaves normally overtopping the flowers. Flowers arising from the underground stem, large, 5-12 cm in diameter, pale to dark blue or mauve, with a white streak in the lower tepals, rarely all white.
Notes: Formerly known as Babiana hypogaea (or B. hypogea), we have followed Goldblatt and Manning (2004) in making the name change to B. bainesii.
